Brandon, City in southwestern Manitoba, Canada, on the Assiniboine River. Brandon is Manitoba's second largest city after Winnipeg. The community is named after Brandon House, a trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company that was built nearby in 1793. Brandon incorporated as a city in 1882. Located on the Canadian Pacific Railway, Brandon soon became the regional center. The city has hosted several sports competitions, including the Canada Summer Games in 1997. In 1999 the Riverbank Discovery Center, a tourist center, opened in the city. Brandon covers a land area of 74.8 sq km (28.9 sq mi). Population 38,500+

Manitoba A province of south-central Canada, It was admitted to the Confederation in 1870. Originally part of a grant to the Hudson's Bay Company, it was largely settled by immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Winnipeg is the capital and largest city. Population, 1,026,241.
