The Big Nickel
The Big Nickel Mine
Underground Tour
The Big Nickel, Sudbury, Ontario, erected in 1951 and commemorating the 1951 Canadian five-cent coin and the development of the Ontario nickel industry.
June, 2001. Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
Normally, Sudbury's Big Nickel stands tall overlooking the Big Nickel Mine. But, when the mine (a tourist attraction) closed temporarily for renovations, the Big Nickel was taken down for its own refurbishment and then placed on the lawn beside Science North. When the Big Nickel Mine reopens in a couple of years, the Big Nickel will be returned to its normal prominent position.
The Soudan Mine remains an operating mine today and visitors to the park can actually ride the shaft elevator (called "the cage") 2,341 feet underground the to mine's 27th level where they see how miners were drilling and blasting to remove ore before abandoning their equipment in 1962. the Soudan is the only mine of its type open to the general public for tours in the world.
