Northern lights and Hale-Bopp comet over Juneau image by Michael Penn Luminous bands or streamers of light that are sometimes visible in the night skies of northern regions and are thought to be caused by the ejection of charged particles into the magnetic field of the earth. Also called northern lights. In 1996, the world was surprised to learn of a comet that would pass slightly more than 9 mil mi from the Earth on Mar. 25, 1996, less than 2 months after its discovery by Japanese amateur astronomer Yuji Hyakutake. There has been more warning for Comet Hale-Bopp, which was discovered in the summer of 1995 by amateur astronomers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp and will be nearest to the Earth on Mar. 23, 1997 |
