The national park was established in 1890. Located in central California in the southern section of the Sierra Nevada range, this rugged mountain wilderness is noted for its stands of giant sequoia trees.
It is the second oldest national park in the United States. It borders Kings Canyon National Park, which is located just north of Sequoia National Park.

The park is situated in the High Sierra, which features several snowcapped peaks more than 14,000 ft (equivalent to 4,267 m) tall.
Mount Whitney, at an elevation of 4,418 m (14,494 ft), is the highest peak in the lower 48 states.

Sequoias are the largest known life-form on the planet and were once found throughout the North American continent.
Some of the largest sequoias in the world are located in the park’s Giant Forest, an area that was explored and named by America naturalist John Muir in the mid-1870s.
The best-known tree in the Giant Forest is the General Sherman Tree, which is more than 2,300 years old.
It stands 84 m (275 ft) tall and has a circumference of 31 m (103 ft) at its base. Many other old and massive trees are also found in the park and are named the President, Chief Sequoyah, General Lee, and the House and Senate.
