Built on a hill, the Capitol contains floor space of 1.6 hectares (4 acres) and its grounds cover 62.7 hectares (155 acres). The neoclassical building is constructed largely of white marble. The iron dome, also white, is surmounted by a statue of a woman representing Freedom.
The original design of the Capitol was made in 1792, and the cornerstone was laid by George Washington on September 18, 1793. |
