Guam
An unincorporated territory of the United States, the largest and most southerly of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean.
Discovered by Magellan in 1521, the island was ceded by Spain to the United States in 1898.
Agana is the capital. Population, 105,900+
.
The island, probably visited in 1521 by Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan,
was formally annexed by Spain in 1565. In 1898,
following the Spanish-American War,
Spain ceded the island to the United States. Guam's inhabitants received U.S. citizenship in 1950.
In 1992 Typhoon Omar devastated the island.
Guam is a self-governing organized unincorporated U.S. territory.
The Organic Act of 1950 provided for a governor,
elected to a 4-year term, and a 21-member unicameral legislature,
elected biennially by the residents, who are American citizens.

In 1972, a U.S. law gave Guam one delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives who has a voice but no vote, except in committees
