Coeur d’Alene enjoys a rich history. Fort Sherman, around which a young Coeur d’Alene grew, was established in 1878. When gold was discovered on Prichard Creek in 1883, many settlers arrived in the area. Steamboat traffic began to flourish on Coeur d’Alene Lake in 1889 when lakes and rivers were used to move supplies to mining and lumber camps. Area waterways were also used to transport logs to mills. The city became a popular tourist destination when electric trains brought residents of Spokane, Washington to enjoy the parks, beaches, and excursion boats.

Coeur d’Alene (lake, Idaho), lake, northern Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. It is 39 km (24 mi) long and averages 3 km (2 mi) in width.
