New Orleans
A city of southeast Louisiana between the
Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. Founded in 1718,
it became the capital of a French colony in 1722 and passed to the
United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
French influence continued to dominate the city, however,
especially in the Vieux Carré and in the celebration of Mardi Gras.
New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana.

The battle of the War of 1812 was fought in January 1815
between American troops led by General Andrew Jackson
and a British force commanded by General Sir Edward Pakenham.
The British attacked New Orleans in
order to gain access to the Mississippi Valley.
Jackson hastily fortified the area and
won the battle with the aid of French pirate Jean Laffite.
