This light marks Thomas Point Shoals at the mouth of the South River on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland It was constructed in 1875 and was not automated until 1986. The white sector of light can be seen (on a clear night) for 13 miles, whereas the back, red sector can be seen for 11 miles. |

An inlet of the Atlantic Ocean separates the Delmana Peninsular from mainland Maryland and Virginia. Explored and charted by Capt. John Smith in 1608. It is an Important link in the Intercostal Waterway. |

he spent many hours as a sub-teen and teen, piloting a small cabin cruiser and searching for this light at night in route home to the mooring on the South River. He also worked on a 75 foot schooner, dragging for oysters in the vicinity of this light. |
