Maryland |
State House |
|
Built during the 300th anniversary of Maryland in 1934, this Jacobean-style brick structure is a re-creation of one of the first public buildings in Maryland. As the Maryland colony began to prosper in the late 17th century, the need for a "decent and Convenient place for the administration of Justice" became evident. Seventeenth-century Maryland government, under the leadership of the Calvert family, was unique in that both Protestant and Catholic male landowners were able to vote in the Assembly. The original site of the 1676 State House is marked in the churchyard of Trinity Church, opposite the reconstruction. |
