The most significant landmark of Tupelo's modern history is a modest,
two-room house where the King of Rock & Roll was born on Jan. 8, 1935.
From this humble beginning,Elvis Presley began his meteoric rise to become the world's most popular entertainer.

Tupelo , city ( pop. 30,700+),founded 1859, inc. 1870.
It is the trade, processing, and shipping center for a cotton and livestock area.
A U.S. fish hatchery is there.
On the Civil War battlefield of Tupelo, now a national battlefield , Union troops repulsed an attack by Gen. N. B. Forrest (July 14, 1864) but nevertheless retreated.
Nearby is the scene of a victory of Chickasaw and British forces over the Choctaw and French (May 26, 1736).
Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo; his home is a tourist attraction.
Tombigbee State Park and the Natchez Trace Parkway visitor center are in the vicinity.

A major part of this growing industry is the scenic and historic Natchez Trace Parkway.
Tupelo is the headquarters of this elongated national park that stretches from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville, Tennessee.
Here, visitors discover the natural beauty of Northeast Mississippi and the history of the Chickasaw Indians and the region's early travelers.

The Tupelo Automobile Museum was especially designed to display over 100 antique and classic cars.
The collection was put together to illustrate the advancement of the automotive body and mechanical designs from the late 1800’s forward.
These include steam and electric vehicles of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s to the various advancements such as pneumatic tires, electric starters and numerous attempts to find a replacement for the manual transmission.
The first car, a single cylinder vehicle begins the progression through 2,4,6,8,10,12, and 16 cylinders.

Mississippi

A state of the southeast United States.
It was admitted as the 20th state in 1817.
The first settlers in the region (1699) were
French, and the area became part of Louisiana.
It passed to the British (1763-1779) and then to the Spanish before being ceded to the United States in 1783.
The Mississippi Territory, organized in 1798 and enlarged in 1804 and 1813, also included the present state of Alabama.
Jackson is the capital and the largest city.
